Smoko in Chinatown - Adelaide
Smoko in Chinatown – Adelaide, South Australia

Taking a break from the gaudy lunchtime grind of the Adelaide-based Hello Kitty cafe, a smoke and a smartphone provides some relief from the working day. The midday hustle and bustle of Chinatown in Adelaide makes for a great locale for the camera.

I quickly manually focussed this photo with the Meyer Optik Trioplan 50mm 2.8 lens. This glass has a characteristic out of focus signature and glow due to uncorrected spherical aberrations when used wide open. The classic triplet design and optical signature has made this particular old lens (including others like the 100mm Trioplan) highly prized and highly priced. I was lucky enough to get mine along with some beaten up Praktica and Zenit film bodies from an ebay seller in Queensland for about $30. There is a way to get yourself the same optical signature quite inexpensively with a different lens and some PVC pipe, but I’ll leave that for another post…
